I seriously have no idea why I was inspired to make this German Chocolate Bundt Cake. I made this in early October, so I honestly can’t remember what prompted me to make it. I think I was just in the mood for something. I love these German Chocolate Brownies so much, and German Chocolate anything – come to think of it – so I must’ve just had a craving.
I usually take notes as I’m making recipes, but I can’t find any notes about this one! I always take notes for this very reason… when I sit down to write, I can’t remember all the little things I wanted to tell you while I was making and photographing it.
In the case of this German Chocolate Bundt Cake, it wasn’t just a few weeks. Five month went by. FIVE MONTHS.These things happen. I overbake and overplan for the blog, and it’s hard to keep up with the writing.
Today is one of those days. I’m struggling! And it’s not helpful that my S.O. is blaring “Cheers” reruns in the background. It’s fun to watch that show again, but it’s a total distraction.
Okay, this Easy German Chocolate Bundt Cake recipe. My Grandma’s Pistachio Bread is really more like cake, and it’s super moist and wonderful. It starts with cake mix, and it gets doctored up pretty good. I used her recipe to make this German Chocolate Bundt Cake. However, there are a few notable changes that make a tremendous difference.
The pistachio bread recipeuses pudding mix to doctor up the cake mix. I used coconut cream pudding mix. Yes!!! Extra coconutty flavor to this cake right at the outset. I also added milk chocolate chips to the cake batter (why not?), pecans, and shredded coconut. You could almost stop there, but you shouldn’t.
For the coconut-pecan frosting, I used the same recipe as these in the German Chocolate Brownies. That frosting is gooey, sticky, caramel-y, sweet, and just all-around awesome. The pecans give it a little soft crunch.
And because it’s more fun if this German Chocolate Bundt Cakeis over-the-top, but still ultra-easy, I made a quick batch of milk chocolate ganache in the microwave, and spooned it over the top. I can always count on chocolate ganache to crank things up a notch.
I have a bunch more simple and amazingly delicious cake mix bundt cake recipes. One of the most popular is the Lemon Blueberry Bundt Cake with Lemon Glaze. That thing is ultra-popular and gets wonderful reviews. It is so moist, and the lemon flavor is so vibrant!
Incidentally, I have a Lemon Bundt Cake too, and just Blueberry Bundt Cake too….
Other fave cake mix bundt cakes that include chocolate would be this Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Bundt Cake and this Oreo Bundt Cake.

German chocolate cake uses a particular kind of baking chocolate as its base, one which has a milder, sweeter profile thanks in part to lecithin, a fatty substance derived from egg yolks. In contrast, classic chocolate cake recipes often use cocoa powder or darker chocolate for a richer, more intense flavor.
A common misconception is that German Chocolate Cake comes from Germany. In fact, the name comes from American baker, Samuel German, who developed a type of dark baking chocolate in 1852. The baking chocolate was then named Baker's German's Sweet Chocolate in honor of German.
The pans have a hole down the middle, which means the cakes come out with a donut shape. The hole helps the cakes cook more evenly. The cakes are generally very dense and therefore often use special varieties of cake mix with more flavorful dry ingredients and less yeast or flour.
Drizzle with a Glaze or Sauce. Save the buttercream for another day because the very best, and easiest, way to decorate a Bundt cake (beyond powdered sugar, of course) is drizzling a glaze or simple sauce over the top. You see, Bundt cakes are simply stunning the way they are.

A devil's-food cake is richer and darker, and has a strong cocoa flavor.German chocolate (a favorite here in south Texas) usually is a lighter-colored cake with a flavor of mild chocolate. True German chocolate cake has delicious pecan-coconut frosting, while the devil's food usually has a dark fudge frosting.
Black Forest Cake is perhaps Germany's most well-known and most-loved cake. It consists of a chocolate cake with a filling of fresh cream and cherries soaked in Kirschwasser—a clear cherry schnapps—and decorated with cream, chocolate shavings, and cherries.
Of these three cakes, German chocolate is the only one that relies entirely on melted chocolate, as opposed to cocoa powder, for its flavor. In fact, its name comes from Sam German, the man who developed a sweet baking chocolate for the Baker's chocolate company of Boston.
Cakes sink in the middle due to several reasons. One reason is that the cake batter might be too moist, causing it to collapse during baking. Another reason could be that the oven temperature is too low, leading to uneven baking. Opening the oven door too frequently while baking can also cause cakes to sink.
Traditional Bundt cake pans hold 12-cups of batter, which is the perfect two-cake cake mix size. Most recipes that make 10 to 12 cups of batter will fit perfectly in most bundt cake pans. As far as other pans go, there is a 6-cup Classic pan, and the Wreath pan holds 6-cups as well.
In the 1970s Pillsbury licensed the name Bundt from Nordic Ware and for a while sold a range of Bundt cake mixes. To date more than 60 million Bundt pans have been sold by Nordic Ware across North America. November 15 has been named "National Bundt Day".
Texture:Cakes made with oil tend to be moister and have a more tender crumb. Oil coats the flour proteins better than butter, resulting in a softer texture. Cakes made with butter can have a richer flavor and a slightly firmer texture. Butter contributes to a more traditional and dense cake structure.
The bundt pan allows more of the cake to be in contact with the edges of the pan, and therefore the heat is transferred more evenly. If you put pound cake into a regular round cake pan, it will not cook in the center or it will burn on the edges.
Once you've cooked your bundt cake and removed it from the oven, allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then place a wire cooling rack over the base of the cake and invert the pan to release.
German chocolate cake mix tends to produce a cake that's lighter in color and less emphatically chocolate. Since the best part of German chocolate cake is the pecan-coconut frosting that goes in the middle and top, probably a strongly flavored chocolate taste would be too jarring.
What is German Chocolate Cake? German chocolate cake is a layered chocolate cake (usually with two to three layers) that's traditionally made with sweet baking chocolate and buttermilk. It's filled and topped with a frosting made from pecan, coconut, and evaporated milk.
The selection of premium ingredients combined with recipes which have been perfected in family-owned businesses for generations guarantee the extraordinary flavor of the baked goods. Compared to American cookies and cakes you will find that products from Germany are usually less sweet.
On June 3, 1957, a recipe for "German's Chocolate Cake" appeared as the "Recipe of the Day" in The Dallas Morning News. It was created by Mrs. George Clay, a homemaker from 3831 Academy Drive, Dallas, Texas. This recipe used the baking chocolate introduced 105 years prior and became quite popular.
