  • The closures begin 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, and end by 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29.
  • The closures are needed to apply high-friction surface treatment to the sections of I-75 damaged during the July 12 tanker fire.

Repairs complete to damaged I-75 pavement after tanker crash and fire at Big Beaver Road in Troy

Fast facts:

  • Repairs have been made to the I-75 pavement and median barrier wall that were damaged in the July 12 tanker crash and fire and the freeway will reopen later today.
  • Ramps that were closed for safety have reopened.
  • Wrap-up work remains and will be completed during off-peak hours.

Freeway lanes and ramps will reopen onthe damaged section ofI-75 at Big Beaver Roadin Troy by late afternoon. All southbound I-75 lanes will reopen at Big Beaver Road. Northbound I-75 will fully reopen except from 8 Mile Road to Wattles Road, where it will have only two lanes open. A right-lane closure remains in place for slope repairs that are unrelated to the July 12 tanker crash and firethat damaged the freeway and median barrier wall. The Rochester Road and Big Beaver Road ramps will also reopen.

To safely rebuild the damaged sections, crews had both directions of I-75 reduced to one open lane. To minimize expected delays and for motorist safety, crews closed the entrance ramp at Rochester Road to northbound I-75 and the Big Beaver Road entrance ramps to southbound I-75.

I-75 at Big Beaver Road Tanker Fire Update

As crews continue to make progress on the repairs following the tanker fire on July 12th, they will begin shifting traffic from the right lanes to the left. Starting today, July 28th crews will begin shifting traffic on both Northbound and Southbound lanes of I-75 near Big Beaver Road. Once completed, one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction as crews work to rebuild the roadway. Thank you for your continued patience.

Talking Michigan Transportation Podcast – Reopening a major freeway after a tanker fire

There are many questions regarding what goes into the reopening of a freeway following a tanker fire. On the recent episode of the “Talking Michigan Transportation” podcast, you can hear more about the coordination efforts involved, process for cleanup, and how MDOT was able to quickly mobilize a crew to begin repairs on I-75 at Big Beaver Road following the fire on July 12th.

Talking Michigan Transportation -Reopening a major freeway after a tanker fire

Entrance Ramps to I-75 have Reopened following tanker fire

We are pleased to say that crews have been able to reopen the ramps from 14 Mile Road to Northbound I-75 and the ramp from Crooks Road/Corporate Drive to Southbound I-75 following the tanker fire last week. The ramps from Rochester Road to Northbound I-75 and Big Beaver to Southbound I-75 remain closed.

Repairs to damaged I-75 pavement at Big Beaver Road in Troy estimated at $1.5 million after tanker crash and fire

Fast facts:

  • The July 12 tanker crash and fire resulted in significant damage to the freeway pavement and median barrier wall.
  • The estimated cost to rebuild sections of I-75 lanes and wall is estimated at $1.5 million.
  • The repairs are anticipated to last six weeks.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that repairs to the damaged section of I-75 at Big Beaver Road in Troy is estimated at $1.5 million. All lanes of the freeway and a portion of the median barrier wall were damaged due to a July 12 tanker crash and fire. Those sections of pavement and barrier will be rebuilt, and all costs associated with the incident response, cleanup and repair will be submitted to the carrier's insurance company for reimbursem*nt.

Currently, I-75 traffic is maintained in the right lane of each direction to allow traffic to move on the freeway while crews rebuild the damaged left lanes, along with the concrete median wall that separates both directions of traffic. Afterward, crews will move to rebuild the right lanes. To minimize expected delays, crews will keep closed the entrance ramps at 14 Mile and Rochester roads to northbound I-75, and the entrance ramps at Crooks Road/Corporate Drive and Big Beaver Road entrance ramps to southbound I-75.

All lanes and ramps are expected to be reopened in six weeks.

30 Minute Closure on NB I-75 at Rochester Road

Crews will close northbound I-75 for 30 minutes tomorrow, July 16th, at 9:00 a.m. to allow for delivery of materials for the tanker truck cleanup. Additionally, crews will also close the NB I-75 to Rochester Rd exit ramp during this time.

MDOT reopens one lane on northbound I-75 at Big Beaver Road in Troy following tanker crash and fire

Fast facts:

  • The right lane on northbound I-75 has reopened at Big Beaver Road in Troy.
  • The right lane on southbound I-75 reopened on Tuesday, July 13.
  • The July 12 tanker crash and fire resulted in significant damage to the freeway pavement and media barrier wall.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that the right lane of northbound I-75 has reopened at Big Beaver Road in the city of Troy. All lanes of the freeway have been closed due to a tanker crash that occurred Monday, July 12.

The reopening of the right lane will allow traffic to move on the freeway while crews rebuild the damaged center and left lanes, along with the concrete median wall that separates both directions of traffic. To minimize expected delays, crews will keep the entrance ramps at 14 Mile and Rochester roads to northbound I-75 closed during repairs.

Once the repairs to the left and center lanes are complete, crews will then begin rebuilding the right lanes in each direction.

MDOT opens one lane on I-75 at Big Beaver Road in Troy following tanker crash and fire

Fast facts:

  • Both directions of I-75 were closed at Big Beaver Road in Troy due to a tanker crash on July 12.
  • The tanker crash resulted in significant damage to the freeway pavement and barrier wall.
  • The right lane of southbound I-75 has reopened, a single-lane northbound is expected to open on Wednesday.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced that the right lane of southbound I-75 has opened at Big Beaver Road in the city of Troy. All lanes of the freeway have been closed due to a tanker crash that occurred Monday, July 12.

The reopening of the right lane will allow traffic to move on the freeway while crews rebuild the damaged center and left lanes, along with the barrier wall that separates both directions of traffic. In order to minimize expected delays, the entrance ramps to southbound I-75 will remain closed at Crooks and Big Beaver roads until the repair work is completed.

On northbound I-75, crews will reopen the right lane during the afternoon hours on Wednesday, July 14. This will allow for the rebuilding of the center and left lanes that were also significantly damaged during the crash. To minimize expected delays, crews will keep the entrance ramps at 14 Mile and Rochester roads closed during repairs.

Once the repairs to the left and center lanes are complete, crews will then begin rebuilding the right lanes in each direction.

Tanker Fire Closure

Due to a tanker fire, northbound I-75 is closed at Rochester Road and southbound is closed at Square Lake Road. This closure will be in place for an undetermined amount of time as crews work to clean and assess the area. Thank you for your patience.
