Most of the surf here comes from groundswells and the ideal swell direction is from the west southwest. The beach break offers mainly left hand waves. Best around low tide.

The best time of year for surfing Westport-The Cove with consistent clean waves (rideable swell with light / offshore winds) is during Winter and most often the month of March.

The beach at Westhaven State Park faces due west and picks up more swell than the other two spots. The ideal wind here is from the east, or offshore in surfers terms. The jetty is located on the North end of Westhaven State Park and to the south there is miles of sandy beach for everyone to Surf.

Not necessarily — it depends on where you plan to surf. High tides are great if you're headed towards a reef break. The only exception is if it's near a bluff, in which case the waves rarely break before hitting land. Conversely, medium to low tides are better if you're surfing near a beach break.

Regardless of which end of the tide cycle you're surfing, the currents during incoming tides are generally better than outgoing tides for beginners. Surfing an hour before maximum high tide is usually ideal if you want waves with great height and speed.

Surf forecasts often display wind direction in degrees/bearing. Surfing is usually best when it's wind-free. A surfer values glassy conditions―a calm surface of the water without gusts of wind―the most, but tough surfers learn to manage even the worst conditions.

Learn How to Read Waves

Reading waves is the foundation of surfing. You can work on this without setting foot in the water. Just practice predicting whether a wave will break fast or slow and in which direction. If a wave breaks slow and crumbles, it's easier to catch.

Praia do Norte ('North Beach') is a beach located in Nazaré, portuguese West region, which due to its giant white breaking waves is famed for its surfing conditions. Nazaré's waves were listed on the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest waves ever surfed.

Arrive at low tide to scope out the beach and look for exposed structure so you can fish it later when it's submerged. The best time to go surf fishing is (from) two hours before a high tide until an hour after high tide.

I use this simple rule with tides and moon phases: If I'm fishing for most surf fish I prefer two hours before to two hours after high tide. If I'm fishing for halibut I prefer one hour before peak high or low tide to one hour after.

Now, how this affects surfing?… Well, every break has it's favored tides, which is mainly due to the bathymetry of that specific break. However, usually most spots favor a 'low going high' or when the tide is on the rise, 'filling in'. This is the believed “tidal push” which may help the forward momentum of waves.

Even where tide is the primary factor, that hour revolving around the end of the rising tide, and the beginning of the dropping tide has proven to be very productive for me at a number of oceanfront locations on Long Island and Cape Cod.
